Bella Sofia Lodge - Sea Trout and Brown Trout in Patagonia

In 2026 I finally made my first trip to Bella Sofia Lodge in Argentina.
It is one of those places I had heard about for years. A place surrounded by stories of sea trout, endless water, strong winds, and fish that stay in your memory long after the trip is over. Still, nothing really prepared me for seeing it for myself.
Bella Sofia Lodge is located along the famous Río Gallegos in southern Patagonia. The lodge controls an incredible amount of water, but what makes it special is not just the size of the fishery. It is the feeling of space. You can spend an entire day on the river and feel like you have the whole valley to yourself.
During my stay I fished both Río Gallegos and Río Chico, two completely different rivers that complement each other perfectly.

The Río Gallegos is where most anglers come to chase sea-run brown trout. The fishing in this mainly shallow river is done by swinging flies across the current, covering water carefully and methodically. It is the kind of fishing where every cast could connect you to the fish of a lifetime.
Most anglers fish double-handed rods around 11 to 13 feet paired with floating, intermediate, or light sinking tips depending on conditions. The Patagonian wind can be a challenge, but the river is surprisingly wade-friendly and accessible.

Then there is Río Chico.
For me, this river was one of the highlights of the trip.
A smaller spring creek flowing through the vast landscape, filled with beautiful brown trout. Here the fishing becomes much more visual. Sight fishing, dry flies, careful presentations, and watching trout rise in crystal clear water. One moment you are swinging flies for sea trout on the Gallegos, the next you are casting a dry fly to a feeding brown trout on a creek.
The gear I came to fish with the most was the following:
For Rio Gallegos:
Rod: Guideline NT11 12´3 #6/7
Reel: Guideline Scandi - Black/Blue #7-9
Line: Guideline 4D compact Body 18g and guideline scandi tip floating 15 foot 9g with Compline Pro 45 lbs
For Rio Chico:
Rod: Guideline NT11 #5 9`
Reel: Guideline Halo EVO #4-6
Line: Guideline Experience #5 floating line
Guideline discount code: flyfishingbyrobert10
Thanks to a newly started collaboration with Guideline, I can offer a discount on their website on fishing gear. This code is only valid on orders in the USA.

After long days on the water, returning to good food, great company, and stories from the river becomes part of the experience. With only a handful of anglers hosted each week, everything feels personal and relaxed.
What stood out to me most was the variety. Few places offer both world-class sea trout fishing and genuinely exciting brown trout fishing within the same program. Every day can be different depending on conditions and the mood of the fish.
If Patagonia, sea trout, and wild brown trout have been on your list, Bella Sofia is a place worth looking at.
