Fish Partner’s Battle Hill Lodge offers more than just a fishing trip. Surrounded by Glaciers, waterfalls, lava fields, canyons, and vulcanic sand, these rivers that we fish offer something truly unique, and they hold some giant sea-run brown trout.
After many years of guiding, I can confidently say that I have never encountered waters as incredible as those here. Both in their striking beauty and in the size and abundance of fish, these rivers are world-class. There is a thrilling challenge in getting the fish to take, and once hooked, the fight is often a story in itself. As a guide at Battle Hill Lodge, I want to help you make the most of your fishing adventure. The standard trip is a 6-day package, including guided fishing, comfortable accommodation, and transfer from Reykjavík or Keflavík. With access to three exceptional rivers—Vatnamót, Fossálar, and Geirlandsá—Battle Hill Lodge is a haven for anglers looking to explore the best of Icelandic fly fishing.

Vatnamót: The Meeting Place of Rivers
Vatnamót, aptly named "the meeting place of rivers," is a dynamic fishery where multiple streams converge, creating an ideal habitat for sea trout. This river is known for its vastness, where the water flows down through a flat landscape of volcanic sand. Each day, the flow changes due to the moving sand, so the key is to find the holes and calmer water where the sea trout stay for a moment before they continue their journey further upstream. The river is partly clear and partly milky of the glacial water from Skaftá river.

Fossálar: Crystal-Clear Waters and Big Fish
Fossálar is a jewel among Icelandic rivers, characterized by its cold, crystal-clear waters and breathtaking scenery. This river is perfect for sight fishing, where anglers can spot and target individual sea trout or present the fly to a whole shoal of fish. Fossálar’s varied structure, with its riffles, pools, and undercut banks, provides a range of challenges and rewards. The sea trout in Fossálar are known for their strength and beauty, making each catch a memorable achievement.

Geirlandsá: A Hidden Gem
Geirlandsá is a smaller, more intimate river that offers a unique fly fishing experience. Its secluded setting and tranquil atmosphere make it a favorite among anglers who value solitude and connection with nature. Geirlandsá is home to some of the most stunning sea trout in the region, and its varied waters allow for diverse fishing techniques. From delicate nymph presentations to deeper techniques, this river is a treasure waiting to be explored.
Fly Fishing Methods for Sea Trout
Fishing for sea trout in the rivers around Battle Hill Lodge demands versatility and skill. Each method has its time and place, depending on the conditions and behavior of the fish. Here are some of the most effective fly fishing methods to consider:
Swinging Streamers: This classic method is particularly effective in deeper pools and runs. Using weighted flies helps to get down to the fish’s level. Patterns that mimic small fish or leeches are ideal for provoking aggressive strikes.
Nymphing: A go-to technique for many anglers, nymphing is effective in both fast riffles and slower waters. Using indicator setups or Euro-nymphing techniques allows precise presentations, targeting fish feeding near the riverbed.
Hitching/Skating Flies: This method involves presenting flies on the surface, It’s a fantastic way to elicit aggressive surface strikes without disturbing the pool too much. For fish that come fresh from the sea and are cautious about their surroundings, a small surface skating fly can be the most effective.
Mastering these techniques and adapting to the conditions will greatly enhance your success on the rivers of Battle Hill Lodge.
The Seasons: When to Fish
Sea trout fishing at Battle Hill Lodge is a seasonal adventure, with each part of the year offering unique opportunities.
