The schlappetizer fly
It’s so fun to go back to what you use to do in the past. Tying zonker’s and streamers with rubberlegs is something I love to do and something I use to do since many years. To apply it to what to what now is possible when so much has happened to the flytying materials and flyting styles can make some cool patterns! I had such a nice response on a similar fly but with a deer hair head yesterday here so I thought I took the ide one step further with this articulated fly.
The idea to tie a fly with two hooks with a wire in between for trout fishing wasn’t something I ever heard of before just a few years ago. When I first fished them I thought they were strange but I have continued fishing with them a lot after Daniel Bergman introduced me to the technique. For deep digging and forcing a reaction this style of fishing can be good, they aren’t the same thing if you swing them like a traditional streamer. They are fun to tie so you should try! Black with fluorescent orange details are my favorite in Tjuonajokk, nighttime or daytime, in rain and in sun. They are doing it!
Give it a try and tie a streamer you like but in a larger articulated version. A good idea though is to think that each hook should fish well individually and that the front hook should be larger than the back hook for best movement and proportion. Tying a fly just like I use to do as far back as 10 years ago, but with all the new styles and new developed materials with a so much better quality there is so many possibilities that opens! Did you like this fly you have material prescription for the schlappetizer fly... and yes! It is important to give all the articulated flies a funny and silly name!
